Ep. 39: Breaking The Stigma, Sheldon Clubhouse's 3rd annual fundraiser

Special BONUS podcast episode this week! Bri attended the 3rd annual fundraiser for Sheldon’s house. She was invited by fellow colleague Rhiannon McCalmount, who is also on the Sheldon House board and the photography event sponsor.

Bri had the honor of interviewing Tara Vandyke immediately after the event ended, in which over 150 people attended. Tara describes how 1 in 5 people will struggle with mental illness at some point in their lives and this specific fundraiser was helping to fundraise the unmet needs that Medicaid does not help with for funding of Sheldon’s House.

What is Sheldon’s House?
It’s a clubhouse that treats their members like a family. Through participation in the tasks that it takes to run the Clubhouse and the availability of resources, members find worth and value in themselves.  Members are seen as more than someone with a mental health diagnosis but instead someone with potential and worth. It is a resource that isn’t as extreme as going to the ER or a mental health facility. It’s that transitional piece that is needed to be the in between that connects those who are suffering with mental illness into their communities with sustainable support.
